► HEAD OF TALENT & ECOSYSTEM

  • My time at Up was an incredible journey, giving me access to some of the most exciting scaleups, from Mambu’s rapid European growth to Farfetch’s B2B expansion. Compared to my early career at Korn Ferry, I felt truly embedded in these businesses, working alongside outstanding entrepreneurs.

Leaving Facebook to join Clare and the team was driven by my passion for the ecosystem and my admiration for her unparalleled energy, track record, and attention to detail. Up’s ‘roll up your sleeves’ culture was unlike anything I’d experienced - everyone was laser-focused on excellence, fostering an environment of low ego, high performance, and continuous learning.

Some of my fondest memories include industry events like the DMAs, launching back into networking post-pandemic, and the camaraderie of the office or morale-boosting Zoom calls.

If you want to grow, push your limits, and be part of something truly unique, Up is the place to do it. It’s not an easy ride, but it’s one you’ll look back on with pride.

    Would I go back? Absolutely.

  • When I think about my time with The Up Group, the word that best encapsulates it is "stretch".

Professional stretch: from working with some of Europe's brightest and most innovative founders, investors and business leaders on critical roles to shape the digital ecosystem.

Intellectual stretch: keeping abreast with the emergence of new technologies and industries and learning how to find creative solutions to historical problems.

Personal stretch: as part of a team of clever, driven (and funny!) colleagues to challenge myself to work at an unprecedented pace and excellence of delivery.

SENIOR ASSOCIATE

  • What kind of work did you do, and what made it exciting?

I did some fantastic work at Up spanning VC, PE, and Listed. I specialised in Consumer Tech - across e-commerce, Marketplaces, EdTech, HealthTech, and Consumer FinTech. This fascinated me as I could resonate with the businesses as a consumer and really get under the skin of the businesses’ missions. A lot of the work I did was for earlier stage businesses (often series B/C), so, I was able to follow the impact of my work in the subsequent time that followed.

    Any standout moments?

I particularly loved working for UNiDAYS, an account that I helped bring into the business. Up allows you to get onto the phones quickly if you prove yourself, and through that fast exposure, I was able to progress quickly and be involved with business development from an early stage.

I also loved working on the Bark.com account as I worked on five different searches across the leadership team and played a fundamental role in the successful build-out of the team.

Any fun traditions or inside jokes that stuck with you?

The never ending ‘search’ terminology / jargon used to describe candidates / clients / businesses.

How did this place shape you professionally?

I owe the vast majority of my knowledge of the tech ecosystem to Up. The exposure you get is phenomenal, attending events through to speaking to some of the best leaders in the ecosystem. My confidence was built up massively through this exposure / early experience and I wouldn’t be where I am today professionally without it.

What’s one word that sums up your time at Up?

    Thrilling!

Why would you tell someone to work here?

If you want unparalleled experience / exposure to the tech ecosystem, you should try to work at Up. It’s intense and demanding but more than worth it for the opportunities of learning and development that arise from this.

  • I’ve always been curious about people. Growing up across multiple countries and cultures, I’ve been drawn to understanding what motivates individuals and how they navigate their careers.

I also love problem-solving. Search is a dynamic challenge - an iterative process of testing hypotheses and course-correcting until we find the right solution. The satisfaction of achieving a win-win-win outcome is both intellectually and emotionally rewarding.

  • I believed in Clare Johnston’s vision when we first spoke in 2010, and my conviction remains as strong today. Back then, ‘digital’ was still called ‘internet’, Series A funding rarely exceeded £1m, and ‘unicorn’ was a child’s word. Clare and the team saw the potential, and so did I.

Having worked in both executive search and in-house roles at Amazon, AOL, and Excite, I knew the challenges of scaling a business first-hand. I wanted to help founders and investors navigate those growth pains. As the digital economy has exploded, so has The Up Group, evolving alongside our clients. We speak their language because we’ve lived their journey.

  • Taking a leap of faith in Clare and The Up Group. I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve built together - a team of fantastic people, a business with real impact, and the privilege of advising the world’s most innovative companies.

  • First, my role as the family alarm clock at 6:30am (6am on ambitious days), followed by a spin class and a strong espresso!

Professionally, it’s the opportunity to make a difference. We help founders disrupt industries, support scale-ups on their journey to unicorn status, and guide leaders through hypergrowth. Our work shapes careers, companies, and industries, and the market intelligence we gain in the process keeps every day intellectually stimulating.

  • I almost became a war correspondent.

At 22, I was enroute to Grozny as a junior CNN reporter but ended up in Moscow working for a think tank. A job search there led me to Korn Ferry - and executive search found me. It’s been the best accident of my life, and I wouldn’t change it for anything.

  • Weekends are active and family-filled. You’ll find me in trainers, not heels, running around with my children, negotiating between museums and escape rooms. I also attempt (and often fail) at cooking, go on marathon walks with my partner, and unwind with Netflix, Spanish jamón, and a good Ribera del Duero.

When I can, I escape into fiction—Stefan Zweig, Graham Greene, John Steinbeck, Dostoevsky—with classical music and a pile of old Economists nearby. A recent personality test scored me 100 on ‘Traditional.’ I see why.

  • My grandfather always said: Hard work and determination go a long way; in fact, they are really the only way. I believe in that whole-heartedly.
